Merry Christmas!

Have a happy year-end period, regardless of which ancient tradition of marking the winter solstice you have inherited from your ancestral culture, and enjoy your chosen rituals of togetherness and renewal in which our similarities -- not our differences -- are celebrated. Although I am a Christian, I do not assume you are one, nor do I hope to convert you to Christianity -- but I still wish you a happy year-end period and confer such blessings upon you as a compassionate heart can offer.

took a linocut course at the craftgym tonight. It was so much fun. in three hours i designed and cut my own linocut block then then used it to make a triptych on small square canvases. I plan on making some more pieces but with paper instead of on canvas. printing on canvas is too unpredictable. the details show a lot better on paper.
the instructor's name was jacquie. she and her partner started the business over a year ago and they just moved to their new space on bush and van ness. going to be looking to them as a potential partner for APR. There were only 2 of us in the class. A girl named Katey from manhattan got the class as a gift from her hubby. will probably be taking more classes there in the future.

twins!

just got back from visiting my newly born neices in Antioch.
they're too beatiful for words.... so here's some pics

8 one thousand

there's a pretty ridiculous thunderstorm sweeping through the city right now. lightning flashes striking every minute with an 8-10 second delay... there goes another one. one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand, 4-one-thousand, 5-onethousand, 6-onethousand... BOOM! i think it's getting closer.
i was in the shower a few minutes ago and so freaked out that my house didn't have a divining rod. and that if i stayed in the shower, tomorrow morning's paper would read something like "lightning strikes man in shower dead"... so i ended up stepping out before i even washed my face.
now most of you that know me know that i don't scare easy.
but man,,, what would you do?

experimenting with flash gels

flickrd by sfxian
this was taken with my new canon and some flash gels... holding the gel in front of your flash you can get some interesting color combos.. it will probably look a lot better with other light sources in the background... going to keep experimenting with this form for a while. stay tuned

ordered these colored gel samples from b&h photo. they're pocket sized gels that i can put over my lens or flashes to add colors to my photos. going to be experimenting with them over the next few days. the gel swatch only costs a penny! that's right. a penny. for 500 different colors!

Life after Saudi

So I started a group on friendster called Life after Saudi.
I'm in the process of inviting all 250 or so people on friendster who report their hometown as 'saudi arabia' and am asking them to join in a discussion of what we remember life being like while we were there, but more importantly what life is like now that we're not.

Here's the current description of the group. I'm hoping it gets off the ground. Haven't had much experience moderating sort o thing. figure it'll take some time to build up membership and really get the content interesting yet focused enough to really get some stimulating conversations going.

Description: A group for people who grew up in Saudi Arabia to tell the stories of their lives after they left and to create a community out of it. Where in Saudi did you live? What did you do while you were there? Where have you lived since then? What are you doing now? Whether you're an ex-pat or a citizen, we all know that the unique experience of being raised within saudi borders has had an impact in certain facets in our lives today. I'm interested in hearing your theories on what living in saudi has done to your day to day lives outside. I'm also interested in hearing what you think about what's going on there and throughout the region today.

weekend

had the company party on friday. it was down in redwood shores at teh office. actually had a great time. everyone was expecting it to be kinda lame, since it was at... youknow.. the office. but surprisingly, they had a really great turnout. i'd never seen the holiday party so packed. food was good, they really transformed the spaces well. kudos to ea for doing a party right.

last night, my cousin christina's boyfriend eugene had a holiday get together at his loft in emeryville. met some nice folks there. cooked up a prime rib... which they all loved, of course :)
found another cook to face off against in an iron chef challenge. we've scheduled it for the first weekend after new years at eugene and kevin's place.
